Anderson County unemployment rate drops to 3.6%

Anderson County’s unemployment rate dropped from 4.2% in October to 3.6% in November, according to a report released by the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW). Anderson County is tied with Berkeley and Dorchester counties for the 7th-lowest unemployment rate among the 46 South Carolina counties. Anderson County’s employment has increased by more than 2,200 over the last twelve months.

National company to purchase Medshore Ambulance Service

Priority Ambulance, a national company headquartered in East Tennessee, announced this week its intention to acquire Medshore Ambulance Service, which provides emergency and nonemergency medical transport services in Anderson County and to more than 100,000 patients in South Carolina each year.

“Medshore is a great company with respected, experienced leadership and an outstanding industry reputation for medical excellence and patient care,” Priority Ambulance CEO Bryan Gibson said. “The company will be an excellent addition to our operations in the Southeast, and we look forward to completing this process to create a strong, united team.”

Piedmont RiteAid to honor local students

Associates at the Rite Aid pharmacy located at 915 Anderson Street in Piedmont will honor five local students receiving Folds of Honor KidCents educational scholarships totaling $25,000 during a special in-store event on Saturday, October 8 at noon.

The scholarships are part of a three-year, $6 million commitment by The Rite Aid Foundation to Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization based in Owasso, Okla., dedicated to providing educational scholarships to children of fallen or disabled service members. In all, more than 400 students have been named recipients of Folds of Honor educational scholarships provided by The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program.

Sales Tax holiday this weekend

South Carolina’s sales tax holiday on back-to-school items such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and bath towels could provide a much-needed lift to many small stores and businesses, said Ben Homeyer, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business. The sales tax holiday is Aug. 5-7.

Coke Distribution Center to hold grand opening – Piedmont

Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated will open a new chapter in its 114-year history in South Carolina by celebrating the grand opening of its new Regional Sales and Distribution Center in Anderson County. On June 23, elected officials, key customers, and community leaders will join Coca-Cola Consolidated at an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the company’s new 150,000 square foot sales and distribution facility on Highway 86 in Piedmont.

LifeFM celebrates one year with concert

WHQA 103.1FM announces its first birthday celebration featuring America’s top quartet Triumphant Quartet and special guests, The Ball Brothers! The LifeFM will host the concert, which begins at 7:00 PM on Friday, April 1st at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley. Tickets are not required for this concert, but a “Life support” offering will be received.

Watson Engineering expanding

In a very brief, businesslike meeting, Anderson County Council gave third reading approval to a series of amendments to existing incentive agreements between the County and Watson Engineering, located in the Piedmont industrial area. Watson Engineering has exceeded the thresholds established in their original incentive agreements, and has experienced more rapid growth than anticipated.

The amended agreements reflect an additional capital investment of $5.7 million, as the company adds another facility. The growth will also create an additional 85 jobs, with an annual payroll of approximately $3 million.

Palmetto Engineering to invest $1.2 million in Piedmont expansion

, a firm that specializes in telecommunications engineering, industrial electrical engineering and GIS telecommunications software, is expanding its Upstate operations with the establishment of a new facility in Anderson County. The company is investing $1.2 million in the project, creating 25 new jobs in Piedmont, S.C. over the next five years.

Established in 2006 and headquartered in Greenville, S.C., Palmetto Engineering provides solutions for moderate to complex electrical and telecommunications projects. A rapidly growing firm since its inception, the company now employs more than 160 workers across Arkansas, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Duke energy to acquire Piedmont Natural Gas

Duke Energy has announced the acquisition of Piedmont Natural Gas for a total investment of $6.7 billion. Duke will assume $1.8 million in debts and will provide an additional $4.9 billion in cash.

Recent improvements in techniques for capturing natural gas have led to the lowest prices in decades, and have fueled a major shift in many industries in terms of fuel used to generate electricity.

  The transaction will bring a million and a half natural gas customers into the Duke fold, which currently includes seven million plus electricity consumers. Thirty two thousand miles of pipeline in seven states will be involved. Both Carolinas, Florida, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky will be affected.
