Piedmont RiteAid to honor local students

Associates at the Rite Aid pharmacy located at 915 Anderson Street in Piedmont will honor five local students receiving Folds of Honor KidCents educational scholarships totaling $25,000 during a special in-store event on Saturday, October 8 at noon.

The scholarships are part of a three-year, $6 million commitment by The Rite Aid Foundation to Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization based in Owasso, Okla., dedicated to providing educational scholarships to children of fallen or disabled service members. In all, more than 400 students have been named recipients of Folds of Honor educational scholarships provided by The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program.

Anderson County Council recognizes Rachel Wyatt

Anderson County Council recognized Rachel Wyatt with a resolution recognizing her success in being chosen as Miss South Carolina and as First Runner Up in the Miss America pagent recently. Wyatt, of Piedmont, graduated from Wren High School and currently attends Clemson University.

Miss Clemson Rachel Wyatt crowned Miss SC

 

Rachel Wyatt of Piedmont, competing as Miss Clemson, was crowned Miss South Carolina Saturday night in Columbia. The 21-year-old is a graduate of Wren High School and attends Clemson University. She performed a jazz dance in the talent competition Saturday night. Wyatt was also Miss SC Teen and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2013. She will compete in the Miss America Pageant September 11, 2016 in Atlantic City. Her platform is Enriching the Lives of Special Needs Adults.

Miss-Anderson-County-Teenres-e1467110032774Miss-Anderson-County-TeenresBrooklyn Brewster of Williamston won the Miss SC Teen Talent preliminary last Tuesday with a baton routine. Competing as Miss Anderson County Teen, she finished in the top 10 out of 62 contestants in the Miss SC Teen pageant. Brewester was also awarded the Duke of Edinburgh award, Presidential Service Award, and Preliminary talent award winner with a $500 savings bond. Brewster attends Palmetto High School and is a featured twirler for the Palmetto High Marching Regiment band. She was also named Miss Sophmore at Palmetto. Brooklyn is the daughter of Lisa Brewster of Williamston. Grandparents Larry and Joyce Coker of Pelzer.

Vietnam Veterans to be honored in Columbia

South Carolina’s Vietnam War era veterans are invited to a special ceremony at 10 a.m. August 2 in Columbia, honoring their service to our nation. Hosted by U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), the event will feature keynote speaker Major General James Everett Livingston (ret), United States Marine Corps, custodian of the Medal of Honor, as well as military bands from around South Carolina, and memorabilia and military artifacts from the era.

Magruder recongized for help finding missing man

A ten year old boy from north Anderson County was recognized for his efforts in locating an elderly neighbor who became disoriented and lost while on his daily walk one day last month.

The Anderson County Council presented Tallin Magruder and his family with a resolution, recognizing his efforts in finding Mr. Barry Thrasher, seventy-two, who suffers dementia and became lost in a wooded area near his home in the Powdersville/Easley area.

Firefighters recognized for life saving rescue

Brandon Herrington and Eddie Workman, firefighters with the Powdersville Fire Department, were presented the Anderson County Fire Department Courage & Life Saving Award on Nov. 22 in recognition of their unselfish rescue in saving a life at a structure fire on November 22, 2013. The award was given to them at the annual Anderson County Fire Department Chief’s banquet January 27.
