Wren student “correspondent” to attend Washington journalism conference

Bethany Fincher, of Easley, a student at Wren High School has been nominated to represent South Carolina as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2012 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University.

Dr. Kelly Pew named superintendent for School District of Pickens County

Former Wren High Administrator Dr. Kelly Pew has been named the new superintendent for the School District of Pickens County. During a their meeting Monday, the school board unanimously approved Dr. Pew to replace Dr. Henry Hunt, who is retiring at the end of June.

Meet the staff Sunday at AnMed Health Wren Grand Opening

AnMed Health Wren Family Medicine will hold a grand opening Sunday, Feb. 12 from noon to 2 p.m. Residents are invited to meet the doctors, tour the practice and enjoy free refreshments. Attendees will receive free water bottles and can register to win a new bicycle.

Project will improve Wren schools safety – $72,500 for road and sidewalks

Anderson County Chief Engineer Judy Shelato presented information to the District One School Board about the Wren Schools Safe Routes to School Project the District and County are working on. During the board meeting Tuesday, Shelato said Phase II of the project will include a number of intersection and road improvements, primarily on LaRoache Drive and will complete sidewalk facilities interconnecting the Wren Primary, Middle and High Schools. Congestion on LaRoache Drive will be addressed by widening from the entrance to the Freshman Academy to Wren School Rd. and a turning lane will be added.

AnMed Wren facility seeing patients

Construction of the AnMed Health Wren Family Medicine facility is complete and the clinic is accepting patients, according to AnMed spokesperson Heidi Charalambous.

The 6624 square foot facility houses a general health care operation and contains nine examination rooms, laboratory space and an X-ray room. The facility was built at a cost of approximately $1.4 million and opened on schedule. The 1.75 acre site will sit on forty acres owned by AnMed near the intersection of Highways 8 and 81.

Wren sidewalk project slated for this summer

The second phase of a sidewalk and traffic flow improvement project for the Wren school area should this summer.

County and School District One officials met with contractors for a pre-bid conference last Thursday to go over the details and specifications for the Wren High School sidewalk project.

Binnicker named Principal of the Year

Columbia – Wren High Principal Robbie Binnicker has been named the 2012 South Carolina High School Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.

Binnicker was selected from an outstanding field of administrator candidates by a veteran panel of judges. The other finalist competing for the award was Jo Mayer from White Knoll High School in Lexington District One.

Rematch: Wren vs Easley

As he stood on the field and talked with fans and media after last Friday night’s 35-21 loss to Easley in his team’s regular season finale, Coach Jeff Tate was asked who and where his Wren Golden Hurricanes would be playing in this week’s opening-round of the State 4-A Division II Playoffs .

“I don’t care (who or) where we’re playing, it doesn’t matter,” he answered over and over . . .
